Can We Talk Pinterest?

Just for a sec...will you humor me, and let me talk at you about Pinterest?

Pinterest and, we get along all right, I giggle and sigh and dream and plan whenever I go on Pinterest. I can get lost for hours, in the idyllic, perfect world that is Pinterest.

Sure, I feel inadequate most of the time but sometimes, I feel thrilled (when I see something from my blog that was pinned!) but then. Ohhhhhhh dear friends, BUT THEN.

Then I stumble upon a fabulous idea. An "oooooooh, I ACTUALLY want to TRY that idea" idea. So, I click.

And what happens?

I get taken to an image page.

Or the main page of a years old blog that no way in heck am I ever gonna find what I was looking for.

Today, I even found something new...I was taken to a blog that was nothing but "popular" pins and found myself going round and round. Click on photo in Pinterest, taken to blog about nothing, but says "click here for source" and I'd click and be taken right back to Pinterest.

And so, what follows are my rules for Pinterest:

1. If you don't know how to pin properly, ask someone. 'Cuz it ain't hard.

2. Pretty, pretty please, before you repin something, follow the pin to see where the source is. If it is a pin of an intricate hair design that leaves you drooling, make sure the pin actually takes you to the tutorial and not to Google Images, 'cuz I dunno about you, but I haven't been able to get anyone from Google to come do my hair. Which means I need to learn it myself.

3. I'm okay with some self promotion. I've done it once or twice myself...but I beg you, DO NOT monopolize Pinterest with your own products over and over and over andoverandoverandover. Trust me when I say it makes me want to gouge my eyes out and never buy your product. And I can't be the only one. (PS...dearest Pinterest self-promoter that I'm thinking of...your product sells itself. You don't need to whore it out on Pinterest.)

4. Hmmmm...you know, I can't think of a fourth one. So, just follow the top three.

Amen.

Over 'n out.

Love ya, mwuah!

This...

We're gonna be doing a lot of this:

In the coming weeks!

Can NOT tell you how excited I am for late mornings and even later nights.

For perfect s'mores roasted by my patient husband.

Looking very forward to sun-kissed skin, tired kids, and busy days.

Three more hours of school tomorrow and then...HELLO SUMMER!!!!!!

In the Kitchen with Gram...Tiramisu!

Once upon a time, in a far away land, in a far away kingdom...my Gram made me homemade tiramisu. The end. (How's that for a story?)

It was heaven. On plate. To be eaten with a fork. Without or without a crown on.

I had recently discovered tiramisu at some Italian place and fell head over heels in love with it. The recipe that follows is what I believe to be a combination of several recipes that my Gram used to come up with this one.

This perfect one.

And if you follow it in order, you only need one mixing bowl...and you don't need to wash it out in between steps! Fabulous.

Alright...first, you've gotta whip your (room temp) whites:

When they start to look frothy, like in the photo above, add the cream of tartar and the powdered sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. This stage seemed similar to the consistency of shaving cream, to me.

Plop it in a bowl and toss it in the fridge to keep cool.

Next up...the whipping cream. (Side note: Did you know that today's whipping cream isn't like it used to be? Apparently there is stuff added to it and it's not like it used to be. Fer dumb.) Whip it until it starts to get t'ick (that's how we say "thick" in MinneSOOOOOOta..."t'ick") and add the powdered sugar.

Plop this into a, separate, bowl and toss in the fridge to keep the whipped whites company.

Last thing to whip? The yolks. Until they're t'ick, then add the Mascarpone and powdered sugar and whip it good. Whip it real good. ;) (Name that song...) (Gah. My gram is probably dying that I referenced a nasty song in her "Tiramisu" post...sorry Gram!)

You don't need to plop this in a bowl, just toss the mixer bowl into the fridge so the yolk can party with the cream and the whites.

Now for the fun stuff...

:)

Make yourself a strong cup of coffee...my gram uses this bad boy:

To make an incredible cup of strong coffee. Yum.

Add in the booze with the coffee and try to refrain from gulping it down right there.

Get your ladyfingers all ready to dunk (as in, "out of the package") and then WORK FAST!! Just a quick dunk'll do...like this: (Real time video)

video

Too long in the coffee/booze bath and your ladyfingers will fall apart. Tragic.

Then, it's time to assemble...first the dunked ladyfingers, then the yolk/cheese mixture, then the whipped cream, then the whites then dust with cocoa powder. Repeat x1.

After the second layer is complete, dust the top with cocoa powder and chill it for 10-12 hours.

That's the hard part...THE WAITING. But it is sooooooo worth the wait!

Note: We ran out of coffee bath stuff...so, I'd maybe make a smidge more. Gram says that's never happened to her before, but better be safe than GAH I RAN OUT OF COFFEE AND BOOZE!! ;)

Gram's Tiramisu
Printable Recipe

1/2 + 2 T. powdered sugar
1/2 tsp cream of tartar

1 oz. Amaretto
1 oz. Frangelico
1 14 oz. package ladyfingers

Step 1:
Beat room temp egg WHITES until frothy, then add cream of tartar and 1 T powdered sugar and beat until stiff peaks form. Place in bowl and set in fridge for later.

Step 2:
In same bowl beat whipping cream until starting to thicken, then add 1/2 c. powdered sugar and continue to beat until very thick.

Step 3:
3 egg yolks, beat until foamy, then add 1 T. powdered sugar and mascarpone and beat until very thick, about 3 minutes.

Step 4:
Combine coffee and liqueurs in small(ish) container and quickly dip ladyfingers in. Immediately after dipping one ladyfinger, place it in 9x13 pan for first layer of Tiramisu (they ladyfingers will get a little soggy, so don't rush this step!). After one layer of ladyfingers in complete layer with 1/2 egg yolk mixture, then whipping cream, then egg white mixture, then dust with cocoa powder. Repeat layers one time starting with dunking the ladyfingers.

Step 5:
Chill for 10-12 hours, slice and enjoy!

Holy Moly

I couldn't possibly let this blog go for two whole days without a post, so this is what you'll get for today...randomness?

If it rains anymore around here, we'll all be underwater. No snow during the winter and so much rain in the last few days that if we converted it to snow measurements, we'd be under at least 6 FEET of snow.

Sure is green when it's sunny, tho...

Baby got an umbrella from my Gram...you'd've thought she won the lottery! In fact, she's sleeping with it right now.

We've been watching The Pioneer Woman's Food Network show on my iPad (love that I can buy episodes off iTunes!) and I made her Cherry Limeade yesterday. Let me just tell you that it tastes EXACTLY like Sonic's. Soooooooo incredibly delicious...I spy, with my little eye our staple summer drink.

So, did y'all know I have Menier's disease? A few years ago I received a "soft" diagnosis...not officially official, but I had 4 out of 4 symptoms, just not terribly severe. Well tonight? Holy moly did I experience some vertigo.

Like, the little bits of dizziness that I've experienced before had NOTHING on this. Even got hot and queasy with it. (No, I'm not pregnant.) I am currently writing this post laying down...and, now I've gotta get started on my Tiramisu post for tomorrow!

You're gonna want to check this one out. It is soooooo good!

See you tomorrow!

Idiocy

Angry. So blown away by the new level of idiocy that my eyes were opened to today.

Stand forewarned...if you feel that DWI/DUI's are unfair, this is NOT the post for you. I may swear. Forgive me...my mama bear is coming out.

So today, I hung out with my parents on the river while Mr. Wonderful had the younger 4 camping and Pal was hanging with his girlfriend's family. It was a beautiful day and I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

On the way home, we found ourselves at some acquaintances/friends of my parents. Extremely generous people who are way too kind and welcome everyone off the river to their place for food and drink. (Personally, I got "we're kind of annoyed" vibes, but whatev...)

My mom and I and her friend were standing around the fire that was being tended to by a neighbor. We girls were talking and somehow (I don't really remember what brought it up) this jackass tending the fire starts talking about DUI's.

He's had 3.

Classy guy, huh?

Before I know it, he's dropping f-bombs like crazy and arguing with my mom about how DUI's are a government conspiracy. How they're based on greed and they're just ridiculous and a "joke" and blah blah blah.

I stood there listening to his drivel, feeling sorry for the bum who clearly needs to go to treatment, and then my mom said something. And it was his response that made me nauseous, it was so unbelievably absurd.

My mom said, "Well, yeah but Joe, you could hurt someone driving drunk."

His response?

His stupid, freaking, idiotic, alcoholic response?

"That's life."

You know what asshole? It's not life. You driving drunk and killing someone is NOT FUCKING "LIFE". It is YOU making a horrible decision and RUINING SOMEONE'S LIFE because of it IS. NOT. LIFE.

You hurting one of my children because you DON'T KNOW WHEN TO STOP DRINKING IS NOT "LIFE".

And what's scary, what my eyes were opened to tonight, is that PEOPLE ACTUALLY THINK like that. Like DUI's are some sort of greedy conspiracy. That if a drunk driver kills someone...THAT'S JUST LIFE.

Re-freakin'-diculous.

I want to cry.

And never let my family leave home EVER AGAIN.

Idiot.

Five Question Friday!! 5/25/12

If April showers bring May flowers, do May monsoons bring...um...beautiful Junes?

If so, we are in for one heckuva gorgeous June! Dudes...I think maybe Minnesota is having an identity crisis and thinks it's Washington State. Rain. Rain and rain and rain and then more rain.

Well...word on the street is that we needed it, so, you know, I guess...fine. I'll let it slide this time. But once school is out? It must only rain at night and the days must only be filled with glorious sunshine, zero humidity, and 80 degree days.

I'll let you know how that goes.

Anywhoodles...onto the party!

1. Are you a napper?

2. What was your favorite subject in school? Most hated?

3. Did you have the something old new borrowed and blue at your wedding? What were they?

4. What one thing are you determined to do this summer

5. Ice cream or Popsicles?

----------------------------------------------

1. Are you a napper?

Yes. I am...kinda?

I love to sleep. Sleeping's my favorite. But, I've learned that if I nap, I don't fall asleep until the wee hours of the morning.

Also, now that I no longer have a napper in the house, it makes nap taking a bit harder. When my babes were small and of nap taking age, I would nap with them. I felt it was I my motherly duty to nap when they did.

I take these motherly duty things seriously. So, nap I did.

Now, my naps are very few and far between...but when I get one? Oh happy day!!! It's like Christmas.

2. What was your favorite subject in school? Most hated?

Well, I was definitely NOT a math girl. No way no how. You know what's sad? My 16 year old has now passed me up in math skills.

No, seriously...he is taking math classes that I have NEVER EVEN HEARD OF. (Well, okay, fine...I heard of them, but it's like they were mythical. Turns out they really do exisit.)

So, yeah. If he wants help with his math classes? It can't be me. I ain't got no clue what the brutha is talkin' about.

English was more my cuppa. I loved creative writing classes and even considered (briefly) an English major in college.

But, if you were to make me choose which "subject" was my favorite? I'd have to tell you I most enjoyed study hall. ;)

3. Did you have the something old new borrowed and blue at your wedding? What were they?

I did!!

It was a little lame-ish, but here's what it was:

New: My wedding dress:

Old/borrowed/blue: My mom's garter. She was a all, "Oh, WAIT...OLD?!?!" And I was all, "Fork it over, old fart." ;)

It actually worked out quite well...I was going to do my toenails blue, but it turns out that blue polish wasn't invented yet in 2001. So I didn't. I am currently, however, sporting blue toenails.

Now you know.

4. What one thing are you determined to do this summer?

Take my family on a summer vacation! Sandy has offered to be my travel guide for the summer and has offered up some fun stuff to see in Michigan...and I'm trying to talk the hubs into it, so we'll see!

It did just dawn on me today that last year we ran into a vacation snafu with baseball playoffs and I recall declaring, loudly and exuberantly, "NEXT YEAR, WE SHALL VACATION IN JUNE!!!" But I'm not sure if anyone heard me, so it may have just been declared inside my head.

In any event, I REALLY want to vacation with my family somewhere this summer...it may very well be one of the last summers we will get to vacation with Pal before he...*sniffle*...leaves me...*tear*...for...*waaaaaaa*...college...*sob*.

So, Sandy...what's Michigan got in June/July? ;) (And if your answer is "only us!" that's more than enough to convince me!!)

5. Ice cream or Popsicles?

Ooooooooh...this is a good one.

Um...hmmmmm. What kind of ice cream are we talking about?

Coffee? Then HELLA YEAH!! Sign me up for that!

If, however, we are talking about Bomb Pops? Then fuhgettaboudit...popsicles it is!

And if there happens to be a smorgasbord of ice cream and popsicles in front of me, I will choose 10 of each, please and thank you.

Okay, fine...prolly a popsicle. BUT the coffee ice cream will always win out. The end.

Enjoy your Memorial Day weekend...and STAY SAFE!!!

Thursday Night 5QF Sneak Peek!

Gotta say, I missed this last week! One week later and the bad guy is in jail...and my husband keeps asking me, "so, you still wanna learn how to shoot a gun?"

I think he likes the idea. ;)

Well, I am facing down a "4 in a row" weekend of work...I know, I know, the rest of America works 5 days in a row, but when a girl's only used to working 2 or 3 (at the most) that 4th day looks daunting.

Skeery.

Hopefully I'll be able to be on call for a couple of those shifts (namely, Sunday and Monday!)...heaven forbid I actually work all 4!

Let's get this show on the road...
