Five Question Friday!! 3/30/12

So, so happy it's the weekend...gonna be a crazy busy one, but love having all my peeps under one roof!

Spring is springing 'round these parts...trees budding, grass greening, mama's still hanging on to winter wear just. in. case. Snow in April (even May!) isn't unheard of, so you JUST KNOW that if I packed away all that winter gear, we would get a blizzard. And then I'd have THAT on my head and MinnesOOOOOtans everywhere would hate me.

I'll deal with the winter gear for awhile if means I'm single handedly holding off the snow.

Welcome to Five Question Friday!! You've come to the right place if you want a fun, easy post or if you've suddenly discovered your muses are completely pooped out and unwilling to offer up anything inspiring.!

Rules for 5QF: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear Friday morning and LINK UP! (Feel free to play along on Twitter, also!)

Oh, and remember (pay close attention...this is the important one)...HAVE FUN!

Questions for Friday, March 23rd: (Special thanks to
Pam (@trooppetrie) from Troop Petrie, Sandy (@PardonMyDust) from Pardon My Dust, Erin (@emenchho1) from The Life and Times of E1, Anna (@annacdaisy) The Single Mommy Chronicles, and Stacy (@JacksonJsmom) from A Boy Makes 3 for their question suggestions! I would love to link you in a future 5QF, so come on over to my community or watch for my Thursday afternoon shout out for questions on Twitter and offer up your best question suggestions! Remember to @5crookedhalos me and use hashtag #5QF if you go the Twitter route!)

1. What giveaway would you like to do on your blog?

2. If you had to choose between natural artistic ability and natural athletic ability, which would it be?

3. Do you ditch the coat the minute it becomes "spring" or are you a holdout for more cool temps?

4. What would you do if you won the mega millions lotto of 1/2 billion dollars?

5. You are at a hotel by yourself...what do you do?

-------------------------------------------------

1. What giveaway would you like to do on your blog?

(FYI, this isn't quite what Pam's question was...I just tweaked it! Sorry Pam!)

Well, if I'm dreaming...how fun would it be to give away something huge. Like a house? Or an all expense paid vacation for an entire family? Or a car?

Or a computer?

Or an iPad?

Or...or any of the giveaways The Pioneer Woman does? Wow. Wouldn't that be fun?!!

Oh, how I would give stuff away if I could...

2. If you had to choose between natural artistic ability and natural athletic ability, which would it be?

Oh man. This is a hard one.

See..."athletic" = "in shape" and if I were a natural athlete, then I probably would enjoy, oh, say...running farther than from my cold car to my warm house. It means being able to hit a ball and actually MAKE IT to first base.

It means not flinching or ducking when the ball gets kicked at you in kickball...also, it means not being so certain you're going to catch said kicked ball that you plant yourself in one spot, only to watch the ball sail far, far, FAR over your head.

However, at some point in life it's likely that it would become far easier to sit at a table and draw...or, if music is considered artistry, then sit at a piano and watch art flow from your fingers.

Or sing. Singing must be some form of art, right? Oh how I'd love to sing.

Or dance.

Wait. Dance. That's kind of athletic, isn't it? Kinda artsy too. Prolly one of those things that artsy athletic people are good at.

*sigh* Some people just have it all...

3. Do you ditch the coat the minute it becomes "spring" or are you a holdout for more cool temps?

Oooooh, did you see my intro? That pretty much answers this question.

I hold out.

For one, I HATE being cold. Loathe it. Abhor it. DETEST it. So, if the weather warrants, I suppose I'll break out that parka again...IF I HAVE TO.

However, you can be certain that that parka won't have been put away put away because I'd hate to be the responsible party for an April Fool's snow storm like we had a few years ago.

I mean, imagine how that mom feels...after washing, drying, and packing away all of her winter gear only to have her diligence be the reason (because, OF COURSE it was) for a ginormous snowfall. NOPE. NOT GON' DO IT.

Let that be on someone else. (You're welcome, Minnesotans...now, I expect the same respect in return. No winter gear putting awayage until June. AT THE EARLIEST.) ;)

4. What would you do if you won the mega millions lotto of 1/2 billion dollars?

HALF A BILLION DOLLARS??????????? Gosh, when you put it that way it makes 500 million sound like peanuts. ;)

Well, see my answer to #1 above? Yup...all y'all would make out like banshees.

I would make sure to secure my children's financial futures...but make certain that they don't get their cashola until they are of a responsible age and after they have learned what it's like to earn a living and experience managing finances on their own. Somewhere between 25 and 30 years old?

I would pay off our relatives debts.

I would secure the Mr. and I's own financial futures.

I would donate to our church and our children's school...generously.

And I would help people out where ever and whenever I could. I would love to be that person who anonymously pays off someone's debt. Or pays their grocery bill. Or hands someone 100 bucks and a smile.

It makes my heart smile just thinking about it! "Extreme Random Acts of Kindness"...my new reality show if I win half a billion bucks.
5. You are at a hotel by yourself...what do you do?

Get my jammies on, turn on some white music, crawl under the covers and sleep. Sleep until my weary body tells me it's time to wake up.

Gosh. How boring is that?!

Okay, I'd jump on the beds after I woke up. Just so I wouldn't have to admit that all I did was sleep.

------------------------------------------------------

Have a wonderful weekend!

iPad Tricks

Do y'all know that I did it? That I finally had saved up enough money JUST in time for the new iPad to be released (yes, "new iPad"...not "iPad 3" as I was corrected in Best Buy whilst buying a cover for said "new iPad"...)?

(Photo via apple.com)

It's true. And, it is pretty sweet.

Prior to it's arrival, I was on the hunt for new apps. I asked, I tweeted, I signed up for appSmitten (which, by the way is an awesome news letter full of app suggestions for Android's, iPhones, and iPads and *WARNING!!! AFFILIATE LINK FORTHCOMING!!!* if you want to subscribe, you can do so right here. I've found some mention worthy apps through there! MadLibs, Lep's World, MathBoard, to name a few...also noteworthy, appSmitten doesn't overwhelm your inbox. Just an email weekly or monthly.) and before I knew it, I had a nice little list of apps to install when my sweet baby arrived via FedEx.

Since I've gotten it, I've search around a bit everyday to see if there are any more interesting apps and yesterday, I stumbled across a nice little 99 cent gem..."iPad Secrets-Tips and Tricks", read the reviews like always and decided my dollar would be well spent on it.

WELL LET ME TELL YOU!! It was worth it's weight in gold! (er...actually, it doesn't weigh anything...) AMAZING! And, since I love sharing things I find helpful, interesting, or useful...prepare yourself for some awesome tips.

  • Did you know you can create an "app" for your favorite websites? Yup...just tap the little square with an error shooting out of it to the immediate left of the address bar and you'll get a drop down list of options that include "Add to Home Screen". Tap that and voila! A handy little app icon on your iPad screen that when tapped, will take you directly to your favorite website. No need to open Safari. BRILLIANT!
  • Do you find that typing with two thumbs on the iPad keyboard is a little cumbersome? The keyboard just a little too "wide" for your hands? Well, with two fingers (or thumbs) swipe outward on the keypad and it breaks into two smaller, much more "user friendly" keyboards for two thumb typing! Like this:
GENIUS!!
  • Laying in bed and want to lock your screen from rotating? (This works for newer iPhones, too) Double tap the Home button (the round one at the bottom) to bring up your "Multitasking Bar" and swipe to the right until you see a square with an arrow in a circle. Tap it and TA-DAAAAA!! You can read on your side without your screen flipping! LOVE!
  • The Multitasking Bar is also great for bringing up your most recently used (and likely most frequently) apps! Hello SHORTCUT!
  • Wanna know another shortcut? (I LOVE this one!) If you are in an app and want to quickly go to another app (take for instance me, who frequently goes between Twitter, Draw Something, and Words with Friends), just put four fingers on the screen and swipe to the left...you'll quickly browse through your recently opened (the same apps that appear on your Multitasking Bar) apps! I DIE.
  • And another quick one...a lot of people already know this (wait...maybe you all already know the tips I just told you?! GAH! I never thought of that...), but if you want to take a screen shot, simultaneously tap the Home Button and the button on the very top right of your iPad (right above your camera lens) and PRESTO! A screen shot!
Okay...I have more, but I'll post those another day! You're welcome. ;)

Remember when...

Remember when just the thought of taking my babe shopping made my skin crawl?

Remember when I figured that I was destined to a shopping free life due to my wee-est one's extreme aversion to anything related to malls?

Well...(you might want to sit down for this one...) I am happy to announce that she appears to BE CURED!!!

And, not only cured, but ENJOYABLE whilst shopping!

The kiddos had the day off of school yesterday (why, I'm not sure, but I'll take any days off that I can get...) and we needed a First Communion suit for Dubya so off we went to Kohl's with my mom's 30% off coupon.

We found his suit...and a whole bunch of other stuff.

BUT I SAVED 280 BUCKS!!

My husband doesn't buy it. Killjoy...always such a "realist" and looks at the bottom line...aka "How much did you spend?" Usually I evade this question with, "Look how much I saved!!!" but he's catching on.

Just like he caught on to my tactic of extreme overexaggeration of spendage so that when I actually told him the real amount, it never seemed as bad (i.e. "I'm sorry hon, I spend $500. Okay, I'm kidding, it was only $350!"...like that.). Hmmmm...actually, I haven't used that one in a while, might need to break it out again!

So, I broke the bank yesterday...but see, I could, 'cuz my last stop was to go Sam's Club to pick up the Dave Ramsey book so we could start to tackle our finances. It was like one last binge drink before jumping on the wagon. Like waiting until after Thanksgiving to start a diet. Go crazy, then buckle down.

Only, when I got to Sam's, the book wasn't there any more. I took it as a sign that we should just keep spending all willy nilly...I mean, what else could it mean?!

In other news...our kids are set for summer clothes.

The end.

Sometimes...

I wonder.

Why don't I play outside with my kids more? Why don't I play their games and spend my time outside with them?

Last night we went to our Goddaughter's 1st Birthday Party (Happy Birthday, N!), everyone else had left and we were (supposed to be) rounding up our kids, when I saw the girls jumping on the trampoline.

So, I hauled myself up there and jumped and jumped (until my bladder proved that I was getting old and I need to go potty before I became the second guest of the day to wet her pants...) ;) and then jumped some more.

On the way home one of the kids said, "Mom...why don't you play outside with us more like that?"

And I didn't have a single answer.

Excuses, yes. Dishes, laundry, (Hunger Games), peace and quiet, supper, yada yada yada.

Fer dumb. All that over time and memories spent with my kids?

I am going to try to make a good, solid effort to get outside and spend some play time with my kids from here on out. My time with them actually wanting me around is limited...so why the heck am I not jumping at the chance to do it more often?!

Less "not right now" and more "sure why not" is about to start happening!

One Year Ago.

One year ago, around midnight last night, my babe was wheeled out of surgery and her surgeon confirmed that she was, indeed, a sick little girl with a nasty old appendix inside of her. Well, actually, he had just taken out that nasty old appendix.

Wow...that was a long week. Now that we're a year removed from it, it sort of feels "surreal" too.

I read back through all of those posts and find it, simultaneously, hard to believe it ever really happened and feeling like it was just yesterday that it happened.

I realized that I neglected to tell you a funny story about the night of her surgery. We had been settled on the Pediatric floor, I had fallen into that sort of "sleeping with one eye open" kind of sleep when I realized the nurse was in our room I woke up, kissed my Belle and discovered she was burning up.

The nurse confirmed that she had just checked her temp and was getting some Tylenol to treat her fever. Belle was starting to stir, so I quietly got close to her face and began reassuring her, "It's okay hon, mom's here" and kissing her cheek, rubbing her forehead, whispering to her what the nurse was doing and she seemed to be getting more and more agitated the more I tried to reassure her.

Finally she said, all groggy and loopy, "Get...OUTTA HERE!" and I quickly sat back and looked at the nurse who had immediately stopped what she was doing and looked at me. We were both perplexed.

Gingerly, I said, "Who, 'get outta here', hon?" thinking, of course, that she, most certainly meant the nurse and not her loving, doting, worried, reassuring mother.

"YOU!" she said to me.

The next day we had quite the laugh about it as I told my family...she said, "Mom, your breath was stinky and you were so HOT." I think SHE was the hot one and me being close made it worse!

Anyway, we tease her about it to this day.

Here are some more things that were kinda vague in those posts (I realize now)...(PS...if you want to find them you can use the search box, above right column, and type "appendicitis" or use my archives and go back to March 2011...the first one is titled "Quick Update" and they go for several posts after that.)

Her antibiotics were initially underdosed. Her surgeon gained ALL of my respect when he totally owned up to and took full accountability for his mistake. As soon as she was properly dosed, her fevers went away...coincidence or not, you decide!

I don't really think she ever had a yeast infection. She never had "those signs". She was having pain when she peed, but is was internal...like where her appendix used to be. I'm now convinced it had to do with inflammation and things shifting as her bladder emptied. But what do I know, I'm just the nurse.

I still struggle with guilt about the whole thing. That I should've recognized it sooner. I joke (laughter makes me feel better) about what a "great nurse/mom" I was...not only did I wait so long that her appendix ruptured, but I waited so long it sealed over again! (Actually, I credit that one to her Uncle Verd for watching out for her.)

Our babe still struggles with what I called "PTSD"...she continues to ask (the tears have mostly stopped) "how long" when I drop her off at my parents if I need to run somewhere (dentist, hair appointment, etc.). She went there the afternoon I brought Belle to the ER for what we thought was just going to be a couple of hours...one week later, we were finally all home, under one roof.

My oldest recently told me about how worried he was. I must've played it pretty cool (actually, I still was in denial about all of her symptoms) when I took her to the ER. He said it was scary for him, hearing that she was going to have to have surgery and then he wasn't able to see her for a few more days because he was at his dad's.

So glad that it is all behind us. So grateful that things turned out the way they did...and hopeful that if something like this ever happens again, that I've been humbled enough to make that ER visit much sooner than I did.

Five Question Friday!! 3/23/12

Sitting here, all 1800's style, with my foot in an Epsom salt bath 'cuz my toe has been bugging me only I can't really figure out exactly where or why my toe is bothering me so why not try an Epsom salt bath, right? Uh huh.

And why do I even have Epsom salt in my house in the first place? I vaguely remember someone else in the fam soaking their foot, but I couldn't tell you who or why or when if my life depended on it.

Weird.

Anyway...let's quit talking about feet. I'm not really much of a foot person...

Welcome to Five Question Friday!! You've come to the right place if you want a fun, easy post or if you've suddenly discovered your muses are wrapped up in The Hunger Games and can't be disturbed UNTIL THEY FINISH THE NEXT (AND THE NEXT AND THE NEXT AND THE NEXT) CHAPTER!

Rules for 5QF: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog post, answer them, then watch for the linky post to appear Friday morning and LINK UP!

Oh, and remember (pay close attention...this is the important one)...HAVE FUN!

Questions for Friday, March 23rd: (Special thanks to Erin (@Midnight592) from Dreaming with Midnight, Erin (@emenchho1) from The Life and Times of E1, Carrie (@Carriewchildren) from Carrie with Children, Laura (@LauraPankratz) and Pam (@trooppetrie) from Troop Petrie
for their question suggestions! I would love to link you in a future 5QF, so come on over to my community or watch for my Thursday afternoon shout out for questions on Twitter and offer up your best question suggestions! Remember to @5crookedhalos me and use hashtag #5QF if you go the Twitter route!)

1. If you were free to just hop in the car and drive, where would you go? Or, if you could hop a plane and go anywhere, where?

2. What's your most recently read favorite book?

3. What's your favorite Spring Break memory?

4. What do you put in your child's Easter basket? Or, for those w/o kids, what was put in your childhood basket?

5. Do you get a summer haircut?

--------------------------------------------------

1. If you were free to just hop in the car and drive, where would you go? Or, if you could hop a plane and go anywhere, where?

I think it would be awesome to take the family on a road trip of the US. (I say that NOW, right?) We had so much fun on our Black Hills trip, that I think it would be a fun way to see the country!

'Course, that would mean an extended period of time away from our jobs, loads of $$, a more comfy vehicle to travel in...the list goes on.

If we could all hop in a plane right now, I would fly my family down to Disney...easiest answer ever!! Then, after that, I'd love to fly the family out to see the hub's bro in California...we've never been out there and I think it would be fun to see where they live!

2. What's your most recently read favorite book?

Um...yeah.

Remember this?

Most definitely the most engrossing books I've ever read. Book 3 is being devoured at this very moment. Well, scratch that...I lie.

I'm blogging at this very moment and my "non-book devouring" husband is devouring Book 1.

Gotta hurry and finish this post so I can wrestle my iPad out of his grip and get back to "Mockingjay"... ;)

3. What's your favorite Spring Break memory?

Well, our school district doesn't do spring break (which, to be honest, I prefer...MN is much better to enjoy in the summer...except for this spring, which has been GORGEOUS!!) and the only real spring break we've ever had was last year, when we had something like a 5 day weekend.

Only thing was, I spent it doing this. And this. And more of this. Still breaks my heart thinking about that poor little peanut in that hospital bed!

When I was in high school, my mom and aunt and a friend and I went to Mexico...not real "spring break-ish", more for my birthday, but right at the beginning of spring break season in Mexico, so I did get a little taste of that, and WOW did we have fun!!

I prefer fun spring breaks over ones spent in the hospital!

4. What do you put in your child's Easter basket? Or, for those w/o kids, what was put in your childhood basket?

Every year I promise myself I'm going to get less candy and more "fun stuff". And every year I end up with less "fun stuff" and more candy.

Gobs of candy.

Oodles of candy.

Heaps of candy.

It ridiculous, really.

But, it basically boils down to candy being less expensive for 5 Easter baskets than "fun stuff" is for 5 Easter baskets. Bad mama, I know.

Maybe this year'll be the "healthy Easter basket" year.

*cough*yeah right*cough*

5. Do you get a summer haircut?

Actually, kinda, yeah. Well...not so much "haircut" as hair color.

I tend to go much more blonde at the start of summer and more "warm" toward fall. One of the lowlights my stylist uses is a reddish color and I am soooooooo tempted to have her do more lowlight and less highlight next fall.

But summertime? Always blonde for me.

And after my brother's wedding reception, I'm going back to a fun "Hot Mama" haircut instead of this shapeless bob I've got going on!

------------------------------------------

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Sure to be a busy one for us...and I'm guessing you'll be bombarded with pics on Monday!

Thursday Night 5QF Sneak Peek!!

Have you heard? That I've been consumed?

Reading is something I can't seem to do in moderation...kinda like those Red Bull Vodkas last year. It's a sickness, really.

I have my mind set that I am going to finish this series by tomorrow. Not because I have to, but because I have to work this weekend and we're going to a community event tomorrow after I get home from work, then we're going to watch the movie on Saturday and then Sunday, if I get off work, my daughter has a dance competition.

It's not about "having" to finish it...it's all about not having the time to read it in the next three days! GAH!! WHATEVER WILL I DO?! ;)

-------------------------------------------------------

Enjoy! I'm off to heat up some leftovers...our fridge is overflowing!

I Have Been Consumed

I resisted.

Didn't think it was "my thing".

I was encouraged to give it a shot.

Denied that I'd ever enjoy it.

And then? I gave in.

And I've been consumed.

The Hunger Games. I've been consumed by The Hunger Games!

I can't get enough! I have to force myself to put it down. To finish supper. To do laundry. To be a mom or a wife or a friend.

It is so entirely captivating! I've even convinced my husband (who doesn't read unless he wants to "learn something") to read it...and my 16 year old wants to as well!

Gotta say...can't wait until this weekend to see the movie.

Can. Not. Wait!
