Sleeping with the Enemy...

Hey friends! Before I get to today's post, I've gotta tell you a little somthin'...I'm the guest blogger today for the Crayon Wrangler! Tuesday's are her new blog hop, "If You Teach a Mom a Lesson", which was born from her wildly hilarious "Lessons Learned" posts!

So, today, I have a Lessons Learned post up over on her blog! You should totally check it out...and join in! It's an amazingly fun, easy post to come up with!

Now...onto my post for today!!

------------------------------------------------

You know...about this time last year, I made a tongue in cheek comment about not being ready to be a First Lady.

Mr. Wonderful had just been elected to our (small, private...but elected, nonetheless) school's school board...and I was excited about his potential impact on our children's many children's Catholic education. Not to mention, I was totally looking forward to getting the insider information about the "hot button" topics. Namely, four day vs. five day kindergarten.

Yeah, still waters run deep. It's the crazy important things like four day kindergarten that turn me into a political activist. Forget about the economy and national health care, I can't be bothered by such stuff...but, try and take my 5 year old away from me for an extra day, and I'll fight you tooth and nail.

As the year went on...I came to understand, in some teeny, tiny, minuscule way...that when a person makes decisions that affect a large group of people, not everyone will agree. I may be a bit sensitive, but I could swear that my husband's school board affiliation has emblazoned me with a scarlet letter.

I'm a pleaser. Big time.

I hate being disliked. So, perhaps I'm a wee bit paranoid...but it seems to me that I'm treated just a little bit differently as more and more difficult decisions were made this year. Smiles seemed stiffer...more forced. The "hi's" and "hello's" not quite as friendly or sincere.

And, if ever I wasn't convinced before that I am not cut out to be the wife of a public figure, I am now.

This is sooooo not my gig. And so begins my speech to convince my husband that the buck stops here. That (please oh please oh please) there will be no more furthering his political career. I would become the skeleton in his closet (literally), because that's where I'd hide.

And I wouldn't come out.

For anything.

Ever.

Well...maybe a cute pair of shoes.

BUT THAT'S IT!!

This whole sleeping with the enemy thing, it's really not my cuppa tea.

Although...in this case...I think the enemy is pretty dang hot. Even when covered in that funky, popcorn ceiling texturing stuff.

Memorial Day...

Today is Memorial Day...a day to remember our fallen soldiers and an opportunity to thank the ones who are currently serving our country. Our US military, and their families, make me so incredibly proud and humbled by their service...I sometimes find myself in tears.

So, with that...thank you. Thank you all SO much for what you do and how you give.

I am an incredibly grateful US citizen who appreciates the men and women, and their families, who sacrifice so much to protect our freedoms and what American stands for. I am amazed at your dedication to our great country, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

All my love, respect, and admiration,

PS...if you haven't seen the submissions for The Pioneer Woman's "Coming Home" photos, you should check them out. They're amazing. Breathtaking, heartwrenching, and simply amazing. Make sure to grab a tissue...

It's a Date!

It has been a non-stop fun weekend...with AMAZING weather (except for today...gloomy, upper 60's, blah...) and FABULOUS fun!

We have another fun filled Memorial Day event planned for tomorrow...and then only THREE more days of school for my kids! Yippee!!!

I live for summer vacation. Sleeping in, beachin' it, popscicles and slip and slides. Morning activities, garden watching, camping and s'more making. I LOVE it!

Do you love or loathe summer vacation? I'm gonna start a thread over in the Fencepost (<------click there to go there!) on this very subject! Check it out!

Okay...it's Date night! This week's Date of the Week is:

"I am a southern girl, born and raised in Georgia. Living currently in NC. I am wife and mother of 3 with the oldest at 21 and the youngest is 3. My blog is about my life and my experince as a Doula (Professional Labor Coach). I share Birth Stories, cooking ideas, pictures of my children and any cooking ideas I can find. Currently thinking of one day having my own buisiness. It's all up to what the Lord has planned. Come on and join in on the ride!!!!!"

I love that Pam is a Doula! As a labor and delivery nurse, I know that a great Doula can make a labor and delivery experience be phenomenal! I've seen some really good Doulas at work, and to be honest...I'm kind of jealous of what they get to do!

To be able to support and coach a mother and father in the birth of their child, without having to chart or watch fetal heart tones, sounds amazing! So, head on over to visit Pam, and tell her Mama sent you! ;)

-----------------------------------

Enjoy the rest of your Memorial Day weekend, and for those of you traveling...drive safely!

Mother's of Multiples...

YOU are amazing.

If ever I thought I was an adequate mom, I was put right in my place when taking care of a friend's twin boys. Honestly...HOW do you do it?

Granted...their daddy forgot bottles for them, and we've long outgrown bottles and thrown away our BPA laden Avent bottles of old, but still. Wow.

I would settle one of the adorable little guys and the other would start up. I had nothing to offer them but applesauce. Real. Adult. Applesauce. Good thing they've already had some solids!

Honestly, I was about ready to whip out a boob...since that was always my own go to tactic with my kiddos! Okay...I really wouldn't have let them nurse. I mean, if I had milk, then yes. I think I would have (I was THAT desperate!!), but since the milk factory's been shut down for a while, it was a no go!

You should have seen those little guys when their mama did arrive! The nuzzled in and nursed like they hadn't seen her in hours.

Which...okay...they hadn't.

Mother's of multiples...you are my new heros. You have my undying respect, admiration, awe, gratitude, love forever and ever and ever. Amen.

Amazing.

So, there they are! See y'all bright and early with the linky! (And, I promise it will be earlier than last week's!)

Whoa. I am so not ready for this.

I'm having a hard time with something. Something that I've never gone through, but will certainly experience again.

My baby is growing up.

He's a full fledged teen-ager, more man than child, now. Shaving, going to dances, interested in girls. Is it weird if my heart is breaking just a little bit? That I get teary over these things?

In one week, he will have "graduated" from 8th grade. He will make his venture into public school and high school next fall.

I'm not ready for him to grow up.

I want to keep him young forever. I know that these teen years are a struggle for a reason. I know that we are now taking our first steps into the separation that will come when he graduates from high school.

And I am SO not ready for it. For any of it.

I hear this gets easier. With each child...but WOW! I had no idea that this whole "growing up" thing would be so hard on me!

Excuse me please...I need to grab a tissue.

I'm Declaring War...Woodpecker War.

For the past week, I have been woken at 5 am.

Not by a child that needs me.

Not by an alarm clock.

Not by my husband.

I've been woken by this vile creature:

And can you see what he's doing?

Pecking on our gutters.

Our METAL gutters.

"Yo, Woody!"

This is war.

You better watch your back, buddy. 'Cuz I'll getcha when you least expect it.

Tuesday Tips with C-Dub!

Hey friends! I decided to join along with the Crayon Wrangler's brand spankin' new "Tuesday's Tips" blog hop! It's a spin off of her "Lessons Learned" posts!

Today's topic is: Cooking with Children

-If you cook with children, you're a better mom than me.
-Letting a small child crack eggs will certainly result in a crunchy ending.
-If "crunchy" is what you're aiming for, let them crack away!
-Cooking with small children will result in many deep breaths and totally frayed nerves.
-Totally frayed nerves are cured only by chocolate.
-Chocolate chip cookies with a mysterious crunch are not quite the remedy you were looking for.
-Next time, you'll just do it yourself.

There ya go! Join in and have some fun!!

My Beloved Picnic Table!

Update: More photos available...AND, we broke in the picnic table tonight!!

Er...ah...that sounded bad. What I mean is, we had our first picnic on the table!! (Phew! Glad we straightened that one out...)

Hand crafted for me by my strong, handsome, incredibly wonderful husband.

I can't believe I once thought that I DIDN'T want a homemade picnic table. For some reason in my brain, I did not equate "handmade" with "superb" and I mistakenly thought that a store bought picnic table would be more superior.

I must've forgotten who(m?) I was married to for a second.

Mr. Wonderful Perfectionist.

This picnic table is divine. You know, if wood and screws can be divine. Large, sturdy, heavy, indestructible.

Just look at the super wide top! No picnic table at WalMart has gotta top like this!

My life is now complete. I have my picnic table...I can die a happy woman.

But, I can't die before I finish this:

My kids would never forgive me.

Once upon a time (like, two days ago) we had an old, wooden futon frame sitting in our "dirt garage" (read: a tuck under garage on the back of our house that is for "lawn stuff" and has a dirt floor. Hence "dirt garage". Don't forget it. I'm only telling you once.), just doin' nothin'.

It struck me (you know, figuratively...not literally. Futons don't strike. They're much nicer than that...) that it would make a fantastic picnic table for our small children (and, if they had their very own picnic table, it would prevent them from overtaking my new beaut.).

So, I disassembled it (sorry, no before photos) and am now reconstructing it, with some occasional help from my husband, ("Do you wanna know what I would do?" he asks. "Sure." I say. "I would *insert male idea here*." says he. "Hmmmm. Fab idea my love...but, nope. I want to do it like this." says I as I go about my business, using his big muscles as I need them.)

Soon, I will have a photo of my completed project for my kiddos (I'm getting to the point, tho, that I will probably have to start listening to my man...as I'm thinking there may be some angles that will need to be cut, and while I'm a whiz with a drill, I'm slightly terrified of electric powered tools with the capability of severing one of my appendages. I'll leave the dangerous work to my love.)...but until then...

Just wish me luck!

Oh...and could you folks in the South please take your humidity back? It's wreaking havoc on my hair. And skin. And armpits.

And psyche.

Thanks a bunch! :D

It really IS the Year of the Picnic Table!!

And tomorrow...I will show you photographic proof that I did, in fact, receive an awesome, homemade, huge picnic table!

I love it!

I love it so much that I started dismantling an old wooden futon frame to make a picnic table for the kids! I'll take some pics of that tomorrow, too...I really have no idea what I'm doing, so I'm not sure what we'll end up with...but it's been a fun little project!

I worked this weekend and it was busy...and it totally interrupted my blogging. Stoopid work. BUT, I could NOT go to bed without announcing this week's Date of the Week!

If you're new to the Date of the Week fun...check out my Personals page by clicking the link above, in my nav menu, or by clicking Personals <------- right there, and get all the details on how YOU can get listed!

And now...without further adieu...I bring you this week's Date, who is...

I’m Lua, a twenty something aspiring writer from Istanbul, soon on my way to the University of Kent to study Creative Writing! Head on over and visit Lua! Tell her Mama sent you!

And now...I must rest my weary head and my tired legs. My bed is calling for me.

See you in the am!

Five Question Friday! 5/21/10

*Yawn*...Mornin' friends! I'm a ti-RED mama today! I had to work until 4 am...LOTSA babies being born last night!

Doesn't surprise me, since every time I've been out and about lately, every other person I've seen has been hugely pregnant!

Anywho...welcome to Five Question Friday...or 5QF! If you haven't ever played before...join in!! It's sooooo much fun!

Rules for Five Question Friday: Copy and paste the following questions to your blog, answer them, then c'mon back to link up (on Friday, of course!). If you'd like, the blog hop code is available for you to grab! I would be a very grateful mama, if you'd link back to me, Mama M.!

If you don't have a blog, but want to play along...feel free to answer the questions in the comments of this post, or any blog along the blog hop way!

Questions for Friday, May 21st: (Special thanks to Pam, Jill, Liz, Erin, and Lula Lola for their question suggestions! Wanna be linked in a future 5QF? Head over to my community and offer up your best question suggestions! We need some freshening up over there...so I'd LOVE to see some new questions!!)

1. Do you have an iPhone and, if so, how do you get apps and what are your favorites?

2. What is your fondest memory of K-3rd grade?

3. What makes you cringe at the thought of touching?

4. If you could have any celebrity show up on your doorstep who would it be and why?

5. What would you say is your best physical feature?

---------------------------------------------

1. Do you have an iPhone and, if so, how do you get apps and what are your favorites?

Pam bullied me to ask this! Okay...well, not really bully, but begged and pleaded...I'm pretty sure, if I had tried, I could've gotten her to give me her first born, for asking this question! ;)

Yes! I do have an iPhone...I resisted it for a long, long time, thinking it couldn't possibly be as great as everyone makes it out to be.

Well...guess what?

It IS! I love it. I'd married it if I could...but since I'm already married, I'll settle for it being my best friend!

And apps? I go to the "App Store" on my phone to get my apps...I've heard you can get them from iTunes (is this true?), but I've never tried.

I'm totally a cheapskate...I think I've only paid for a couple of apps (kid ones), and the free ones are AWESOME!

My favorite app...is probably Google Voice. I love that if I'm on the fly, I can just talk into the phone and find a phone number or an address, lickety split! In fact...I have a funny story about my Google Voice app that I just may share someday.

But not now. It's too long.

My most used apps? TweetDeck (which would/could also fall under "favorite" or, perhaps, "can't live without"), Weather Channel, and Caring Bridge (a "favorite" too!).

My kids like DoodleBuddy, Flight Control, Papertoss, Wheels on the Bus, and iXylophone.

Fun stuff that keeps 'em busy and quiet in a pinch.

2. What is your fondest memory of K-3rd grade?

(Kyrsten...K-3rd is our first four years of school: Kindergarten-3rd grade!)

Alright...promise you won't laugh?

I know you're gonna.

Even if you promise...'cuz y'all are like that. But, I guess, I LIKE that! ;)

My fondest memory of K-3rd (would NOT be trying to kiss poor Michael Nelson every opportunity I ever had...sorry Michael!)...my very favorite memory?

Aside from my most awesome Kindergarten teacher...it would be the lunches I would get for fieldtrips!

Those lunches were the bomb!! And the fieldtrips?

Well, let's just say they don't do 'em like they used to! My poor kids don't know what they ever missed. They do things like "go to the Arboretum"...we did things like "go to the Minnesota Zoo".

Poor, deprived, neglected kids...

Anyway...my lunches were the BEST! My mom would take us to the store the night before our field trip and let us pick out our pop and our "snack"...my snack was ALWAYS a Banana Flip.

Pure trans fat in a delicious, little, banana flavored treat. Mmmmm...I want one right now.

Hold please, while I run to the store (will you look after my children while I'm out? They're still in their jammies...m'kay? Great. Thanks!)

Back now. How were the kids? Perfect little angels, I'm sure. :D

3. What makes you cringe at the thought of touching?

Vomit.

Ew...but, sometimes...I have to. It's a hazard of being a mother. (BTW...does anyone else ever feel like the smell of vomit permeates it's way into EVERYTHING, and makes you feel as if you have bathed in it? Or is it just me?)

I also can NOT stand to touch a bug.

You know those talk shows that have bug peeps on them? Ooooh, look out...I'm gonna bust out a big word and show you how smart I am...you know, "entomologists"?

When they have those great big cockroaches and other totally disgusting bugs?

Yeah, I would go running and screaming and gagging and crying in the other direction as fast as I could.

*Shudder* Bugs suck.

4. If you could have any celebrity show up on your doorstep who would it be and why?

I wouldn't care who it was as long as they said, "I'm dying, and I want you to have all of my money and my multiple homes, my private jet, and my housekeepers."

I would love for Sandra Bullock to knock on my door, with that gorgeous new baby of hers, and sit down over a cup of coffee and chat. (All the while I'm snuggling her delicious new baby boy!)

Oh, and I was gonna say George Clooney...but since I've recently discovered that he is a man whore, I'm boycotting him.

Whoever will take his place at the top of my Top 5 list?!

5. What would you say is your best physical feature?

We discussed this recently, over at the Fencepost, and I just LOVE this question!

So often, we focus on the negative...what we don't like about our bodies, what we want to change, etc. that we forget to look at the positives! Remember my letter to my twelve year old self? I think I could write that letter, with different "foci" to myself at many different stages of my life.

I'm really trying to love the skin I'm in!

But...my best physical feature?

My cheekbones or, maybe, my hair.

--------------------------------------------

Okay, my fellow 5QF'ers...it's time to link up! I am looking forward to reading your posts!!
